How to Replace a Ridge Vent

Replacing a ridge vent is not a project done on a regular basis. It can, however, be done without any difficulty. The satisfaction derived from replacing your own ridge vent is indeed satisfying. With a proper guide, one can replace his own ridge vent easily. The tools and guide you will need to perform this job are listed below.

Tools Needed for the Job

* Heavy-duty work gloves
* Safety glasses
* Saw horses
* Saber saw
* Circular saw
* 1x4 common lumber, felt paper
* Roofing nails, no. 6 hammer pry bar
* 1 ½-inch galvanized nails, flashing cement
* Asphalt shingles bundle to compliment roof currently

Step 1 - Access to the Roof

Set a ladder up to have access to the roof. Choose a designated area for material wastes that you will be removing from the rooftop.
Step 2 - Remove the Existing Shingles

Use a hammer and flat bar to remove ridge cap nailed on the vent's top. Remove all the shingles that lap over the roof vent's lower edges. Lifting the top portion of shingle should expose the whole of the metal flange vent. Lift the shingle by putting the pry bar (flat) under the roofing nail heads. Pull the nails up without causing damage to the shingle.
Step 3 - Remove the Existing Ridge Vent

Wear the work gloves and safety goggles. Remove the existing ridge vent using a hammer and a pry bar (flat). Take your time and pull out the nails one by one. Remove all nails completely. Throw away the old shingles and existing roof vent.
Step 4 - Check Sizing and Measurements for New Vent

Determine whether the new vent you bought will fit exactly into the existing opening. If it does not fit, adjust the opening size to fit the vent. Before tearing off any more roof, measure the opening for accuracy. If more roof sheathing has to be added to decrease the opening size, cut 1 x 4 pieces of lumber. This will help correct the length and width. Nail each lumber piece onto the rafters using short galvanized nails.
Step 5 - Laying Felt Paper and Asphalt Shingles

Cover all the bare wood using felt paper. This felt paper should overlap the old ones. Felt paper which is heavy-duty can be applied using short roof nails or large staples. The felt paper should come up right to the opening edge. Continue with asphalt shingles until they are at the roof vent opening edge.
Step 6 - Install the New Vent

Put the new vent into place. Be sure that metal flange at the side covers the existing opening completely. Apply a thick layer of cement over the flange edge. Apply the cement under the flange too. Use the 1 ¾-inch roofing nails to nail the metal to the roof sheathing.
Step 7 - Place Ridge Cap

Cut the ridge cap and nail it onto the vent top and its peak portion on either side. Cap pieces are cut from the asphalt shingle. Next, nail the asphalt shingles onto the roof on the vent's side.
