Idiot's Guide to Soldering for Dummies Demystified?
I've taking up electronics as a hobby. I've been working with the little kids' spring-connection kits you get at Radio Shack, and I'm ready to move on to something a little more advanced.
I want to set up a little workshop at my place, and I'm interested in anyone's opinions about what soldering irons are worth owning, what tools and materials are most essential, and what else should be included in a fairly complete home electronic hobbyists kit.
If you know of particular types of multimeters, oscilloscopes, educational or hobby kits, and all-in-one tool kits, I'd love to hear about them.
Well, first of all you need a soldering station. Which is usually where you hold your soldering iron between soldering. It also contains a small yellow sponge which you use to clean the soldering tip. As in soldering iron itself, I'm quite fond of butane powered ones made by Iroda. If you do want to get a butane powered one, I advise that you check Iroda's soldering-pro kits and pick the one that fancies you. If you want to get an electric one, you should get one with around 30w - 60w or one that has a variable control unit because I have a feeling you will be soldering wires and pcbs.
For the solder, you won't have to worry about that if you get a kit but if you don't, you should get a 0.026" rosin core solder and depending on you, 60/40 solder (which means 60%tin and 40%lead,) or lead free solder.
You should also get a helping hands as usually your hands are full with the iron and solder. Another important item is a solder fume extractor which sucks up the harmful fumes produced while soldering. You can either make one from instructables.com or you can just buy one. Now I'm not sure about which multimeter but I think must are ok. You might want to invest in a breadboard to check if your circuit would work before soldering them.
Some other items you might like are altoid cans (or a project box), wire cutters, a dremel with a diamond wheel with a drill bit, tool kit, and electronic parts. But it depends on what kind of things you want to make.
