How Can I "Compensate" a Person Who Gives Me a Nice Gift When They Aren't Well Off?

I recently got back in touch with a long lost relative.

The relative makes very nice hand crafts as a hobby and sells them at craft shows.

She sent me a very nice gift, which I love.

But, I feel bad because this person is on very very very limited income. I'm sure she has more important bills (food, electricity, etc.) that are more important than giving me gifts.

When I send a thank you note, can I include a gift-card? Or would that be improper.

I don't want to insult the person but I realize that this person is probably having a harder time financially than the vast majority of us.
The person lives very far away

Don't send the gift card right away, I would find that insulting if it was done to me. It would remind them that everyone knows about their difficulties, and might make them feel very embarrassed - which could come out as anger. A lovely heartfelt handwritten thank you note, possibly with a picture of the gift being used, or in situe would be a start. Later, think of something they would like....but wouldn't/ couldn't afford for themselves. I saw this and I thought of you...Much better than an impersonal gift card. A little luxury can brighten anybodies day.

Just a thought, if she has spare capacity, could you drum up a little extra trade for her goods through your contacts? "My friend saw my gift and would love ...."
