Should i cut on the line or right before the line in woodshop class?

IM using the miter box, or sometimes the chop saw. to cut out wood should i cut on the line or right before the line
I use the bench rule to square a line across

Depends on how accurately you mark the board and how sharp your pencil is. I always measure the exact length I need, mark it with a sharp pencil, and then leave the line. The line is no more than 1/64" wide, so leaving it makes no difference. If it does, I can always shave a whisker off. When framing, I use a rectangular carpenters pencil, which makes a thicker line. Framing is more forgiving though. 1/16" doesn't make a difference. But I still leave the line, since that's the way I always mark my measurement. After enough cuts, you'll learn your own tendencies.
