What approach to take on new recruits?
Hi, my names shayan moghaddam. I'm a member of a Combined Cadet Force in London. Recently, I have been given the task of being the instructor to the new recruits. I've considered it a bit and don't know whether to take the typical "american drill sergeant" approach (that is scaring the hell out of them and make sure they don't piss about) or go more friendly and sociably. A mix of both maybe? I dunno :-S
The reason for the typical american drill sergeant approach is this...
You are bringing people from all over the place and telling them to work as a team...for ex...a guy from Kentucky, who has never had to work with multiracial people...a guy from California who might think it is acceptable to sexually harass someone...a deeply religious person who has trouble coping with the training.. and much more.
Now you have to get all those personalities working together as a team. They have nothing in common except the fact that they all think your a prick. Guess what? They all now have something in common!
As for your mixture of both? My experience is 1st you have to know every one of your recruits, and you may have to tailor your leadership style to each one. A 35 year old won't respond the way a 17 year old will to screaming in his ear. You may express to him that you "need his help in controlling the younger guys. Play to their emotions, psyche, and wants.
Don't coddle them! Show them that you care for them by giving the best training that you can, make sure they are eating and drinking plenty of liquids, ensure proper medical treatment, and punish them dearly for infractions of rules, regulations, and instances where YOUR embarrassment is concerned. Remember they are a reflection of your leadership. If you've done a good job you will catch them emulating you ie the way you walk and talk. Smile slightly, let everyone see you, and then wear his ass out. They will understand that its just business and will respect you even more!
Always hold them to the standards! Whatever they do is not good enough! But be careful you still have to praise their efforts every so often.
Good Luck
