How do you solve this word problems I am really having a hard time with this Please help?

1.During the first part of a trip a canoeist travels 97 miles at a certain speed. The canoeist travels 18 miles on the second part of the trip is 3 hrs. What was the speed on each part of the trip

2.If a pro basketball player has a vertical leap of about 35 inches, what is his hang time? Use the hang-time function V = 48 T^2

3. Write a quadratic in the variable x having the given number as solutions. Type the equation in standard form, ax^2+bx+c=0
Solution: 5,only solution

1) You're missing a word or two in this question. Was the second part of the trip completed in 3 hours, or was the whole trip completed in 3 hours?

Speed is (distance / time). It's a little hard to help with this one until you clear up the typo.

2)
V = 48 t^2
Vertical leap of 35 means V = 35

48t^2 = 35
t^2 = 35 / 48
t^2 = 0.7291666
t = sqrt (0.7291666) = 0.8539 seconds

3)
If the equation has only one solution (let's say it's Z), then the equation is in the form

(x - Z)^2 = 0

So...
(x - 5)^2 = 0
(x - 5)(x - 5) = 0
x^2 - 5x - 5x + 25 = 0
x^2 - 10x + 25 = 0
