Installing open element air filter on 1984 caprice classic?
I'm installing an open element air filter on my 84 caprice classic 305 v8 5.0 4 bbl carb engine. I noticed that on the big black donut like filter housing on the engine now (stock) has a metal hose that goes to the side of the engine and a black rubber hose going to something else. What do I do with these assuming the new open air filter assembly doesn't have hookups for these. Do I plug them up leave them exposed unconnected or something? Any help will be greatly appreciateped thank you!
Please, *do not plug the air intake supply line off that goes from the base of the air cleaner to the valve cover. If you do, the PVC valve will not operate properly. That line that drops from the base of the air cleaner allows the crankcase to breathe. If you stuff it off, every gasket in the motor will start to leak.
If it all possible stick a breather on the valve cover instead of using this line. If there is no breather hole, several aftermarket companies sell Chevrolet valve covers with at least one breather for one cover. Leave the PVC valve alone also. It sucks a measured amount of crankcase blow-by back into the base of the carburetor for emissions reasons.
