What does SAE mean in reference to tools?

I see this term stamped on certain tools or included in advertisements. Does it only pertain to american measured tools or metric tools as well..what does it mean?

SAE is an acronym for the "Society of Automotive Engineers" and when used in conjunction with tool grade or measurement (not oil), is a standardized unit of non-metric measurement. Simply put, in measurements it means "Non-Metric". In wrenches or sockets you will find either SAE or Metric sizes listed, the SAE sizes will be fractional in inch measurements. ie.:1/2 5/8 15/16 where as metrics will be in mm ie. 18mm 10mm 22mm
